Obituary of Sarah Hudson

Castine- Sarah Fownes Hudson, 74, passed away peacefully with her sister and her beloved niece by her side September 10, 2021, in Sarah’s new home in Hermon. Sarah was born August 18, 1947, in Pennsylvania, the oldest daughter of Thomas and Caroline Hudson.

Sarah grew up in Fox Chapel, PA.  In 1965, Sarah graduated from Rosemary Hall, where she was a strong athlete and smart as a whip. Sarah went to Colby and discovered her love of Maine. Sarah lived most of her life in Castine, where she lived with her sister Caroline.

While working at Castine Memorial Hospital, Sarah was instrumental in starting the Bagaduce Ambulance Service in 1977. While training the ambulance volunteers, Sarah also oversaw the service until 2012. After leaving Castine Hospital, she became a faculty member at Maine Maritime Academy where Sarah taught Ship’s Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Sarah also taught Emergency Medical Technician courses around Hancock County. Sarah was well respected and a mentor to many. The number of lives Sarah touched because of her teaching was incredible.  Sarah earned multiple awards for all she did, including MMA’s “Unsung Mariner”, (which is given to a staff or faculty member who demonstrates outstanding community service and support of student life), the “Volunteer of the Year” from the Town of Castine, the EMS Special Merit Award, and the Maine State “Citizen Of The Year” for her contributions in Emergency Medical Service. Sarah also received recognition from members of the Maine State Senate and House of Representatives on her retirement for years of service to the citizens of Maine. Sarah taught CPR and first aid to local elementary students, fire departments and EMS response teams. Sarah served on the American Heart Association regional board for 25 years

For those of us who were lucky enough to have known Sarah, she was the most loving, loyal friend and colleague. Sarah was a real role model for strength, courage, and fortitude. Sarah loved walking the beaches of Maine looking for sea glass and the beaches of Florida looking for sea shells. Sarah’s other great loves were her house, her pool, gardening, and of course her girls. Sarah was so quick to remind you of proper table manners and proper use of the English Language. A favorite quote from her time as a teacher at MMA, when a student made a mistake was, “Well, you’ll never do that again!”

Sarah was predeceased by her parents; sisters Caroline and Laura. She is survived by sister Nancy O’Hallorhan and husband Bob; niece Chrystina Belakiewicz; beloved nephew Daniel. Sarah adored Daniel and every bit of time they spent together!

Sarah’s family would like to thank Jamie Hamilton for all the care and attention he gave to Sarah. Jamie had become a good friend to Sarah and we are all so grateful to him.

At Sarah’s request there will be no services. Donations in her memory may be made to Castine Fire Rescue Volunteer Association (CFRVA), P.O. Box 602, Castine, ME  04421. Messages and memories may be shared with the family at kileyandfoley.com
