Phil graduated from Newport High School in 1966 and studied for a year at Farmington State Teachers College before attending The American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York City. After graduating, Phil returned to Newport where he interned at Farnham Funeral Home and worked on the ambulance service. In June of 1971 he married Barbara (McKenzie). In 1977, Phil and Barb opened Brown Funeral Home in Newport where he worked until retiring and selling the business on his 53rd wedding anniversary in 2024. Phil was a very active volunteer throughout his life. He was proud of his time with the Boy Scouts of America in Troop 63, earning his Eagle Scout rank and continuing his involvement in scouting for over 50 years. Phil also served proudly on the Newport Fire Department, retiring as Captain of the Rescue Squad, continuing to vote as an honorary member. Phil and Barbara both served as directors of the Newport Community Food Bank and together they rarely missed a Saturday morning volunteer shift.
Phil was very proud of his family. He is survived by his wife Barbara Brown of Newport, ME, son Peter Brown and his wife Anne-Marie of Falmouth, ME, daughter Sara Brown of Westbrook, ME and two grandchildren Elizabeth and Zachary, also of Falmouth.

Following his wishes and after nearly 50 years of funerals, it will be brief.
