Obituary of Lina Vydas

Holden – Lina Vydas, 78, died suddenly February 3, 2025 at her home in Holden. She was born Sept 25, 1946 in Mexico City with a given name of Maria Guadalupe Elorriaga. Upon finishing secondary education, she entered a secretarial business academy at the age of 17.  Her first employment was with an import company where she worked with IBM Computer punch cards in managing the inventory. She subsequently went to work for the social security system of Mexico and by age 22 had become the executive secretary to the chief of the treasury. While working there, she met Dr. Algis Vydas then still a medical student. They married in 1971 and spent two years in Canada where her husband completed further medical studies. She and her husband moved to Maine in 1975 and after a few years of living in Brewer, settled in Holden.

Lina never shied away from embracing her new country and was always very generous with her time in helping anyone who would ask. Her kindness and mild demeanor endeared her to many people. Some of the activities she was involved with are as follows: Brewer Welcome Wagon, substitute Spanish teacher, Sweet Adeline Chorus, Garden Club, federal court translator, rape crisis volunteer, Senior College, Literary Volunteers and Centro Hispano Board member and secretary.
