Obituary of Stephen G. Hall
Stephen Gary Hall, 77, of Brooks, Maine passed away on Monday, March 31 after a brief illness. He was at home, surrounded by his family and cats, looking out the windows at his beloved meadow, and listening to “World of our Own” by the Seekers.
He was a lifelong resident of Brooks, an active member of the Masons and the VFW. He served for 15 years as a Brooks town selectman, following in the footsteps of his father guiding the town he loved; his sister continues the tradition to this day. His love for the town encompassed both its history and its people, past and present. He proudly served in the Army for 4 years, fought fires with the Bangor Fire Department for 9 years, taught middle schoolers at Mount View Junior High for over 20 years, and always considered himself a farmer. He was a keeper of stories, and had things to talk about with everyone he met. He knew history to a point that you could ask him, on any given day, what had happened in the past and he could tell you what happened on that particular day, centuries ago. One of his favorite questions was “Do you know what today is?” He’d always have an answer to his own question and he was never wrong about the event.
An avid reader, he loved browsing old books at the Big Chicken Barn and learning all he could about history. He shared his love of reading aloud with his children and grandchildren, and during the COVID pandemic, read stories and posted them online - these videos were enjoyed by his grandchildren and also the children of many of his former students far and wide. He was well known for his eccentric ties and dramatic eyebrows (he could balance a pencil on them!) and love of good pie. He also made great biscuits.
He is predeceased by his parents, John and Frances (Hawkins) Hall, and brother in law Russell Lord. He is survived by his wife, Roxy, of 50 years; his five children, Gary Hall and his wife Ingrid of Jackman; Bert Hall of Shanghai, China; Suzannah (Hall) Maynard and her husband David of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Katherine (Hall) Nye and her husband Bernie of Palermo; and Adam Hall and his wife Lindsay of Bangor; his sister Linda (Hall) Lord of Brooks; his brother Wayne Hall and his wife Jo, niece Jessica, niece Alexandra and her husband Greg, and their children Julian and Sam of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; his sister Patricia Rowe of Portsmouth, NH. He was especially devoted to and enamoured by his six grandchildren- Wesley, Damian, Matthew, Jaxton, Marjory, and Emily. He will be very, very missed.
