Obituary of Sophie M Malikowski

Orono - Sophie M Malikowski (Kaniecki), 97, passed away Monday, July 28, 2025, at Dirigo Pines Retirement Community in Orono. She was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts, on October 16, 1927, the daughter of the late Frank and Stella (Dontrz) Kaniecki.

Sophie grew up on her parent’s farm in Southampton, MA, and graduated from Easthampton, MA, high school. She married Walter Malikowski in 1949. Sophie worked as an electronics technician for Digital Equipment Corp. until her retirement. She cultivated beautiful flower gardens at her home in Chicopee, MA. Her husband Walter passed away in 2009, after which she moved to Waltham, MA, to live with her daughter Karen. They enjoyed several years of travel in the United States and the many cultural activities of the Boston area. Sophie moved to Dirigo Pines Retirement Community in 2018 after the death of her daughter Karen in 2017 to be close to her son and family in the Bangor area.

Sophie enjoyed flowers, classical music and rides in the country with her son Tom. She enjoyed living at Dirigo Pines and the many friends she made there.

Sophie is survived by her son Thomas of Bangor; grandson Tim and spouse Kim of Hampden; granddaughter Mary and husband John Dube of Winterport; granddaughter Amy and husband Garth McNally of Bangor; grandson Peter and spouse Sarah of Hampden; great grandchildren Emily, Alyssa, Luke and Tyler. She will also be missed by her special friends Dee Dee and Carol in Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her husband Walter; parents; daughter-in-law Valerie; brothers Edward, Charles, and Anthony; sister Jennie.

The family would like to thank Kris and St. Joseph Hospice personnel, as well as caregivers Jenn, Bonnie and Jamie for the loving and special care they provided to Sophie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Tuesday August 5, 2025, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John Catholic Church, York St, Bangor. Burial will be next to her daughter in Waltham, MA, at a later date.
