Obituary of Joan Elizabeth Franz
Bangor--Joan Elizabeth (Greenwood) Franz passed away the morning of Oct. 25, 2016. She was born on Jan. 15, 1926 to Clinton and Lora May (Gould) Greenwood in Farmington. Joan was a granddaughter of Maine inventor Chester Greenwood and was a Mayflower descendent through her mother's family.
Joan married Robert (Bob) Franz in Farmington on Sept. 3, 1946 and was married for 58 years. Robert predeceased her on July 12, 2004. Joan graduated from Farmington High School as salutatorian at the age of 16 and received her degree in journalism from the University of Maine in Orono in 1946, where she was valedictorian and president of the All Maine Women Honor Society. Joan's husband worked for the federal government and they lived in different areas of the US including Georgia, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Michigan. They retired in their early 50's to Newburgh. Joan worked for 10 years for the US Post Office.
She was predeceased by her two sisters: Jacqueline Chandler and Eileen Popp. Joan was the loving mother to, and is survived by, five children: Davee (Orin Tyson) Franz of MI, Ken (Jan) Franz of ME, Dana (Sheryl) Franz of IA, Robin Franz of FL and Gregg (Brenda) Franz of Michigan. Joan is also survived by brother George (Abbie) Greenwood; 7 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; many great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; by numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Winterberry Heights, Premier Home Care, and Beacon Hospice for the love and care they gave to our mother.
Memorial service will be held 2 PM Thursday, November 10, 2016 in the chapel at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta. In lieu of flowers donations to your favorite charity are welcome. Messages and memories may be shared with her family at kileyandfoley.com
