Obituary of Frederic M. Martin
Holden – Frederic M. Martin, 85, died June 6, 2018 at his home in Holden. He was born Nov. 29, 1932 in Astoria, New York, the son of Michael and Lillian Martin. Fred served 26 years with the US Air Force. He enjoyed competition shooting and shot at the top of his class for three days at Camp Perry, Ohio. While stationed overseas, he served as a flight instructor, training airmen to fly the F-111 Aardvark fighter jet. Upon retirement, he worked for R. B. Dunning, an electrical equipment supplier. He also enjoyed teaching and, at the age of 43, became a driver’s education instructor working 30 years for Bair’s Auto & Cycle School. Fred was the oldest living founding member of the Orrington Rod and Gun Club. An avid sportsman in his younger years, he enjoyed hunting elk and big horn sheep in the Arizona and New Mexico wilderness. As a proud member of the NRA, he was a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms.
Surviving are four children, Victoria Fisher of Wootton, England, Donna and Vincent Martin both of Holden and his youngest son, John Martin and his wife, Stephanie, of Clifton; seven grandchildren, Wesley Fisher, Jonathan Fisher, Ryan and Ashley Dobbs, Katherine Hartin, Molly Martin, Jacob Martin, Joel Martin and his wife, Jolene; four great grandchildren, Isaac Martin and Brayden Michael Hartin, McKenzie Martin and Jasmine Fisher. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan Shirley Martin in 2011, by a grandson, John Martin Jr., in 2002 and by a great grandson, Eric Maverick Martin. Frederic will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
At his request, there will be no formal service but there will be a memorial gathering at a later date. Burial will also be later this summer at Clewleyville Cemetery, Holden.
