Joan Barrett

Obituary of Joan Barbara Barrett

Orrington & Eastport—Joan Barbara (Flaherty) Barrett, 86, passed away October 11, 2018, following a long battle with dementia. She was born June 21, 1932, in Eastport, the daughter of Karl and Mildred (Malloch) Flaherty.

She graduated from Shead Memorial High School, Class of 1950. Joan was married to Donald Barrett for 62 years. Together they owned Mill Creek Rod & Gun for 33 years. They enjoyed RV traveling and camping. They spent winters in Florida where they enjoyed gun shows, gambling and whatever traveling adventures they could find. When their kids were growing up, Joan was the "Neighborhood Mom" and their home was always open to the entire neighborhood, often with her many baked goods being the center of attention. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Joan and Donald had a regular Wednesday afternoon card game with their friends. After learning how to make wreaths during her upbringing Downeast, she continued to do that for many years for Lougee and Fredrick's Florist, using the money she earned to provide Christmas for her family.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband Donald; daughter Brenda Daigle; brother Terry Flaherty; brother-in-law Bruce Bowden. Joan is survived by children Gerald "Chip" Barrett of Orrington, Nancy Gormely and husband John of Hudson, Cindy Black and husband Jeffrey of Corinth; grandchildren Brian Daigle, Nicholas Daigle, Alicia Getzendiner, Nathan Barrett, Jason Black, Justin Springer, Benjamin Barrett, Matthew Springer, Katharine Mitchell; 10 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way); siblings Lynn Bowden of Portland; nieces and nephews Brian Bowden, Gary Bowden, Amy Mannette, Erik Flaherty, Lisa Flaherty; special niece Elaine "Lanie" Hall.
