Obituary of Donald L. F. Coffin
Donald L.F. Coffin, 89, died June 29, 2019 in Bangor. He was born March 24, 1930 in Passadumkeag, Maine to Douglas and Helen Faulkner and adopted by grandparents, Leon and Alice Coffin when he was two years old. Donald graduated from Bangor High School in 1948 and immediately joined the Air Force. Most of his time in the service was with the Strategic Air Command during the cold war. He also served as an instructor of air raft and engines into the jet age with numerous assignments in Massachusetts, Texas, Mississippi. Japan and 15 years at Dow AFB. His most outstanding assignment was the last 5 years of his career with the 89th CAM SQD with Air Force One from 1965 to 1970. Following military retirement, Don went to work for the City of Bangor on the flight line at BIA as air craft mechanic for 24 years. After retiring again, Don kept busy with various part time jobs until his early 80s. Don was a member of East Orrington Congregational Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. He was lovingly known as "Deacon Don". He was also a member of the Ralph J. Pollard Masonic Lodge 217, the American Legion, Penobscot Conservation Club, Air Force Sergeants Association and the Air Force Association.
Donald is survived by his wife of 37 years, Alyson Coffin of Brewer; his son Stan Coffin of Bangor along with his children Elyssa and Bryce and great grandson Aidan all of Bangor; his daughter, Elizabeth Jackson and her husband James of Orlando, Florida; half-brothers, Rodney Stanhope and wife Jerry of Hampden, ME, Reginald Faulkner, Phil Faulkner and half-sisters, Dottie Andrews and Joan Farrell as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at East Orrington Congregational Church, Johnson Mill Road, Orrington with the Rev. Carl B. Schreiber, officiating. Burial with military honors will be held later in July at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta. Memorial donations may be made to East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Road, Orrington, ME 04474 or to a charity of choice.
