Obituary of George Q. Moran

Winterport - To know George was to love that grin and twinkle in his eyes. He is now twinkling in the stars above, able to watch over the family and friends that he loved. Many of our memories of George involve sports, starting at a very young age with his love of baseball. All his life, George usually won whatever he was playing, whether it was horseshoes, corn hole, bowling, or cribbage. At Brewer high school he ran track, with some of his teammates recalling George running so fast that he caught up with a deer, jumping on its back and riding it. He was a running back on the 1968 Maine Class A Football Championship team, with an unbeaten, untied record. This team was to be inducted into the Brewer High School Sports Hall of fame this year. In baseball, he played shortstop with his long-time dear friend Ron Estes playing second base. This team was Brewer’s Greatest Baseball Team and State Champions in 1969. Beyond being a great athlete, more importantly George is remembered for his kindness. His teammates stating, “He is so selfless and generous; quiet, yet fully there for everyone, competitive while being completely supportive”. He continued this love for sports by refereeing high school football games throughout the state, while his sons played, and helping coach his daughters’ softball and basketball teams. George was a beloved father and grandfather, the best you could have asked for. He shared his joy for life with all of us. From being the best babysitter to his grandchildren, and playing everything from Dollhouses, sledding, and taking them for rides on the lawnmower. He loved all of the sports and activities that his children and grandchildren participated in; watching them with pride and cheering them whether they were championship games or a beginning T-ball game. Going to the Maine High School Basketball playoffs was an annual occurrence for George and Cindy. He was also a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Fantasy Football. He passed on his love for fishing to many of his friends, children and grandchildren. He had a passion for cooking; with his family and friends remembering his famous spaghetti, meatballs and sausage, chili, fish chowder, and potato salad. Cindy and George shared many adventures: building their dream home, road trips, snowmobiling, vacations in Island Falls, Schoodic Point, Cape Cod, watching fireworks, Disney trips, whale watching and soaring in a hot air balloon. George started his working career at an early age as the neighborhood paperboy. After high school, George became a painter, like his father, George Sr, painting everything from boats to mansions, and even an unlucky cat one time with his good friend Cal. George “Bugsy” Moran was a proud 36-year employee of the US Postal Service, holding various positions. The one he loved most was at the window where he was able to interact with his customers. Most people in Bangor knew him or recognized his smiling face. He was respected and loved by postal co-workers all over the state. His love lives on through his beloved wife and best friend Cindy, and all of their children together, Ben Rancourt and partner Melissa, Quint Moran and wife Amy, Josh Rancourt and wife Julie, Crescent Chasteen and husband John, Amanda Wild and husband Tony. George especially treasured all of his grandchildren. His greatest joy in life was being a grandfather to Ocean, Poet, Dillan, Jordan, Samuel, Hunter, Tristan, Sophie, Alexandra, Josh, Grayson, Rosalie, Owen, Liam, and Brody George. George was the son of the late George “Hippo” and Ruth Moran, and brother to sister Dianna and the late Ron Darling, Mark and Tina Moran, Melissa and Paul Stearns, and Stephanie and Tom Perkins, and brother in law to Denise and the late Earl Wright, the late Archie Verow and wife Frances, Carol Verow, Kathy Dowling and partner Edgar. George was loved by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. George is remembered by special friends who became like family: Billy and Kathy, Ron, Tim, David and Pat, Sandy and Cal. George’s family would like to thank St. Joseph’s Hospice (especially Christine); his Acadia care team: Rachel, Josh and Dr. Singer; St. Joseph’s Nurses and CNA staff; and the care team at Westgate for all providing loving care. George would like his friends and family to remember, “If you think of me and are sad, that is OK. But please don’t stop thinking of me until you recall something happy that leaves a smile on your face.” Even if you only briefly knew George, he left you with a lifetime of memories to make you smile. In his honor, take time to whistle a tune, buy stamps, skip rocks and search for sea glass, take the backroad, eat an ice cream, hold hands and always keep a piece of candy tucked in your pocket. The family will have a small private service. They will also hold a larger celebration of his life tentatively scheduled on his birthday, October 17, 2020 with more details to follow.
