Obituary of Phyllis M. McAvey

Phyllis M. McAvey, 88, passed June 3, 2023 in Auburn after a brief illness. She was born June 14, 1934 in Glenburn, the daughter of Clyde A. and Dorothy M. (Nowell) Thayer.

Phyllis was a graduate of Bangor High School and was a longtime resident of Hermon. She helped manage the family trucking business, McAvey Transport Limited, with her husband Ken. Phyllis also volunteered at the Ross Home for over 20 years and was awarded volunteer of the year.  She enjoyed real estate and acquired many homes in the area. Phyllis was her own gardener for all of her homes, especially her main home in Hermon. She was a well-known cook, catering many weddings and events for her close friends and family. Phyllis was a true servant of hospitality and always made people feel welcomed in her home.

Surviving are three children, Dale Carl McAvey of Brewer, Sheryl Champagne and her husband, Terry of Mabank, Texas and Patti Mc Avey of Maine; three grandchildren, Lindsay Reznicek and her husband, Jason, Beau Champagne and Chelcie Shappy and her husband, Joe; two great grandchildren, Jase and Reese Reznicek. She was predeceased by her daughter, Lorenda Fowler in 2019 and by her husband of 70 years, Kenneth McAvey in August of 2023.

Family friends may visit 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor where a service honoring Phyllis’ life will be held at 11:00 AM as the visitation concludes. A time to celebrate Phyllis’ life will be held immediately afterward at Lucerne Inn, 2517 Route 1A, Dedham. Private burial will be at Puddledock Cemetery, Charleston.
