Obituary of Wayne L. Sweeney
Wayne L. Sweeney, 71, finished his life’s journey June 10, 2023 with his wife and family by his side. He was born July 10, 1951 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, the son of Bernard and Lottie (Davis) Sweeney.
Wayne and his family moved to Maine in the 1970’s and he grew up in Calais. His working life included many years in food preparation and with the kitchen staff of EMMC and St. Joseph Hospital retiring in 2010. Wayne loved watching Western movies and like watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Planet of the Apes, a couple of his favorites. Wayne loved his family and was proud of the blended family they had become treating all his kids as they were his own. Wayne was best known for his faith in God, his devotion to family and his love for his beautiful bride of 41 years. He was a great listener, wanted everybody to know that he was there to help and he had a sense of humor that warmed the hardest of hearts. Wayne was an active member of New Beginnings Church where he taught Sunday School. He will be missed but would want everybody to carry on and put God first. In Wayne’s words, “I’m in pretty good shape for the shape I’m in.”
His family gratefully thanks New Beginnings Church for all the support and kind words and is especially thankful to Scottie and Alicia from Gentiva Hospice for their support during his final hours.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Andrea of Bangor; his children, Matthew, Jennifer and Kelly Sweeney of Bangor, Shelly Sockwell and her husband, Mike of Bangor, Raymond Miller and his wife, Misty of Oregon and Chris Sweeney and his wife, Vannessa of Levant; 13 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; one sister, Cheryl Cooper of New Hampshire; three brothers, Larry of Calais, Glen of Virginia and Sherwood of Maryland; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by a brother, Stafford.
A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held 11 AM Saturday, July 15, 2023 at New Beginnings Church, 1606 Hammond St., Bangor. Messages and memories of Wayne may be shared with his family on the Kiley & Foley Funeral Service website tribute wall at kileyandfoley.com.
