Obituary of Eleanor F. McCaffrey

Eleanor Frances Barker McCaffrey, affectionately know as “Tillie” or “Red”, died Friday, July 12, 2024 at a Bangor hospital. She was born November 25, 1929 in East Stoneham, Maine the daughter of Cecil and Eva Barker. She attended school in East Stoneham through eighth grade and then attended Norway High School where she graduated in 1948. She studied nursing at the Rumford Community Hospital and New Hampshire State Hospital. She later worked for Dr. George Underwood at the Medical and Surgical Clinic in Dallas, Texas, the Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan and Bangor Mental Health Institute until retirement in 1992. She also worked at Old Town Shoe Department and Bangor Walmart. She enjoyed spending time with family, doing crafts, gardening, being involved in her churches as well as spending time at her “second home” in Mexico Beach, Florida. Eleanor owned and operated “Reds Market” in Veazie where she created many community relationships. She enjoyed many fine meals in the company of friends at the Parker House in Orono and was a member of the Veazie Seniors for many years where she spent time with other community seniors.

Eleanor was predeceased by her husband Eugene of 56 years on May 27, 2008, her son Shawn McCaffrey on July 27, 201, her three brothers Edmund Barker, Chester Barker, and Glendon Wight, two sisters-in-law, Ellen Barker and Betty Barker and one granddaughter, Olivia Dunn. Eleanor is survived by her children Brandy (Ronald) St. Pierre, Bonnet McCaffrey and Shannon (Holly) McCaffrey; 10 grandchildren, Aubri St.Pierre (Christopher Marksberry), Ron St.Pierre, Kelly Dunn, Casey (Steve) Cote, Erin (Matt) Bogenhagen, Ian (Sarah) McCaffrey, Caitlin McCaffrey, Cullen McCaffrey, Keelia McCaffrey; five great-grandchildren, Ashley Rowlett, Natasha Rowlett, Derek Hunter, Owen and Sam Cote; one great-great-grandchild, Theo Babin; sister, Glenna Trask; daughter-in-law, Rita McCaffrey; and sister-in-law Lavonia Wight.

At her request, no formal services are being held. A private graveside service will be held for the immediate family. Eleanor will join her husband “Gene” at Lawndale Cemetery in Old Town, Maine.
